Scanning Reality Box (SRB-1) Blueprints

Scanning Reality Box (SRB-1)

It's been a long time in the making, but I'm finally able to release the build plans for the SRB-1 to anyone that wants to scan there own materials.

For those not familiar with the scanner, it is a enclosure that allows the user to easily scan surfaces by photographing a surface using the technique called Photometric Stereo. After which using software such as Substance Designer/Alchemist or Artomatix you can generate extremely high resolution normal maps. Then using the normal map and diffuse to create photo realistic materials.

The design process has gone on for a while and you can see the progress on my blog here https://www.artstation.com/daverig/blog

and you can see examples of materials created here

When purchasing the SRB-1 (re-branded from ScanBox) plans you will receive all the STL models needed to 3D print the part for the scanner along with plans to build the parts that are not 3D printed. Along with this a Assembly  manual to instruct you how to put all the parts together.

I would list this build at a "Intermediate" level. I've tried to make the kit simple to assemble but assembly will involve some light woodworking and soldering.

The scanner is only a platform for you to capture the raw images, you will still need to provide a camera and software (Substance Designer/Alchemist, Artomatix, ...) to turn those images into Materials.

A write up I did for Allegorithmic's blog explaining the process can be found here https://www.artstation.com/artwork/b9kRd

Here's a example of the capturing process using the original prototype.

If you need to re-create real world surfaces this process can really speed up the process for you and raise the quality of your work.
